October 29-31, 2009

Southern Exposures: Locations and Relocations of Italian Culture

This year's conference seeks one-page proposals for panels and individual presentations on the themes of Italian immigration and ethnicity in the American South. The conference intends to address a number of related topics concerned with nature, nurture, and culture. Topics may include: the transplantation of Italian culture to different parts of the Western Hemisphere; the interrelationship of climate, agriculture, and culture in Italian American life in the American South; music (especially the role of Italian Americans in the creation of jazz and other Southern American genres); the role of Italian Americans in regional agriculture and industry; cultural cross-fertilization in the politics, language, journalism, fiction, drama, poetry, folkways, gastronomy, religion and religious customs; identity construction; Italian American societies and clubs; honor and identity in Italian American culture; photography, film, and other forms of visual cognition. Ultimately, is there a Southern state of mind?

We encourage submissions for entire panels. Please send requests for information, and one-page proposals, including contact information for each presenter, by June 25, 2009.
